Paychex is ADP's forever-rival, serving small business payroll since 1971, and its Flex platform covers the same ground: payroll with tax filing, HR add-ons, retirement, insurance. Two things earn it a specific spot in a payroll-fraud directory rather than a generic payroll roundup.

First, the time clock hardware. Paychex sells biometric time clocks, including iris-recognition units, that plug straight into Flex payroll. Iris and face-verified punches are the actual fix for buddy punching, not the deterrent-grade photo capture most software-only tools offer, a coworker cannot punch you in with your PIN when the clock wants your eyes. If you run a warehouse or a plant where time theft is a real line item, this is the feature, and almost none of the software-first competitors have an answer to it.

Second, employee-facing verification: Paychex Pre-Check lets employees review their paystub before payday, which quietly turns your whole workforce into fraud auditors, people notice when their check is wrong, and with Pre-Check they notice before the money moves rather than after. The trade-offs are the classic Paychex ones: quote-based pricing beyond the $39/mo + $5/employee entry plan, fees that accumulate in the fine print (setup, year-end W-2s, multi-state), an upsell-heavy sales culture, and contract termination terms worth reading twice.

If buddy punching is costing you real money, the iris clocks move Paychex to the top of the payroll-platform list. If it isn't, the fee structure is hard to love.

Pricing

Flex Essentials is published at $39/mo + $5 per employee; Select and Pro tiers are quote-only. Real-world totals land higher once setup fees, year-end processing, time tracking, and hardware are added. Biometric time clocks are purchased or leased separately on top of the time & attendance module.

Features

  • Payroll with automatic tax filing and employee self-service
  • Biometric time clock hardware (iris and facial recognition) wired into payroll
  • Paychex Pre-Check, employee paystub review before payday
  • Paychex Promise, extends payroll funding up to 7 days to avoid NSF failures
  • Role-based access and payroll audit trails
  • Same-day ACH for correcting a pay run
Pros
  • Iris-recognition clocks are the strongest anti-buddy-punching option in the payroll-platform category, full stop
  • Pre-Check makes every employee a reviewer of their own pay before funds move
  • Published entry price for small teams, unusual for a legacy payroll bureau
Cons
  • Fee accumulation is the recurring complaint, setup, year-end, and per-service charges inflate the quote
  • The good fraud features are add-ons and hardware, not part of the base price
  • Platform interface and support quality trail the modern competitors
Best for

Hourly-workforce businesses (manufacturing, warehousing, healthcare shifts) where hardware-grade biometric time verification justifies a legacy vendor's fee structure.

Not for

Office teams with no time-theft exposure, you'd be paying Paychex prices for features you'll never plug in.
